A Twisthaler® consists of a plastic device containing dry powdered medication. A Twisthaler is breath activated. This means when you inhale, the Twisthaler automatically releases the medication. When inhaled correctly, the medication has a better chance to reach the small airways. This increases the medication's effectiveness. The portable size, efficiency and convenience make the Twisthaler a desirable method for inhalation treatment.

This device is called a Twisthaler. It is a breath-activated device, which means that the medication is released when you inhale.

To open the Twisthaler, hold the Twisthaler straight up with the pink portion on the bottom. This is important to make sure the right amount of medication is loaded in your device. Turn the Twisthaler cap to the left to remove it. As you turn the cap, this will open the next dose of medication. As you open the Twisthaler, make sure that the indented arrow on the white portion of the Twisthaler lines up with the counter window. Do not shake it, cough, or breathe into it or you will lose some of the medication.

To take your medication, turn away from the mouthpiece and breathe out. Then carefully bring the Twisthaler to your mouth and seal your lips tightly around the mouthpiece. Breathe in rapidly and deeply and hold your breath for as long as you can, up to 10 seconds. Let me show you what that should look like. We already twisted the cap off and primed it so now we’re going to inhale.

If you were instructed to take another dose, you’d put the cap on, twist the cap off, and do that again. After you take the dose, wipe the mouthpiece dry if you need to. Replace the cap by twisting the cap to the right. You will hear a click when the cap is fully closed. The cap pointer will also line up with the counter window. Repeat these steps for each dose you’ve been told to take.

Always rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after using the Twisthaler. The Twisthaler has a dose counter on the pink base. It will let you know how many doses are left. As you turn the Twisthaler cap to take it off, the dose counter will count down by 1. The Twisthaler will count down to 0 when the the Twisthaler is empty.

To clean the Twisthaler, do not put it in water. Simply wipe the mouthpiece with a clean cloth when it appears dirty or at least every week and then be sure to put the cap on the Twisthaler after each use to help it stay clean.
